ORIGINS OF THE MINERAL
Sodalite is part of the Silicates family. It is one of the rare minerals that can be found mixed with traces of white calcite.
The name sodalite comes from the Greek "soda" which means "sodium" and the suffix "-ite" comes from the term "lithos" which means "stone" or "mineral". Its literal name means "salt stone" or "sodium stone", due to its composition.
Sodalite was first discovered in the 1800s by a Scottish mineralogist named Thomas Thomson. It was subsequently classified and recognized as an ornamental stone in 1891 .
