ORIGINS OF THE MINERAL
The name of this stone comes from the village Shunga located in the province of Karelia in Russia. This is where it was discovered, at the end of the 19th century. However, shungite only appeared in lithotherapy in 2009. The basis of much current research, shungite has not yet revealed all its secrets, starting with its formation.
It is believed to be sedimentary and dates back two billion years. It could come from a meteorite or from marine microorganisms, as various scientists suggest.
It is also used as fertilizer for agriculture, and to keep pests away from plants or animals. Research carried out to date concludes that the astonishing benefits of this stone come from the presence of a unique form of carbon, fullerenes. Its general health effects could also be linked to the combination of quartz (SiO2) and carbon which are essential for cells.
