ORIGINS OF THE MINERAL
In 1803, Abraham Gottlob Werner, a German mineralogist and geologist, first described rutile, the name of which comes from the Latin “Rutilus”, meaning red. Indeed, certain specimens are characterized by an intense red color due to the titanium that composes it. Rutile quartz crystals have been known since Antiquity, and are used mainly as ornamental stones. The inclusions in golden needles and the warm colors that this crystal displays have long earned it the reputation of a stone that traps sunlight.
