ORIGINS OF THE MINERAL
Obsidian owes its name to the Roman Obsius who discovered it in Ethiopia. It is a volcanic glass, an amorphous stone, without a crystal system. Viscous, acidic volcanic lava, containing about 70% silica, obsidian formed as it cooled rapidly.
They are found wherever there has been volcanic activity, particularly in North and South America (United States, Mexico, Canada, Ecuador, Peru, Argentina, etc.), Australia, Japan, Iceland, but also in Greece and Turkey.
Obsidian was the basis of tools and arrows in Prehistory for its sharp appearance, then throughout the world for various uses. The Aztecs and Mayans considered it a stone of protection.
PHYSICAL PROPERTIES
It is easily recognized with its white dots (cristobalite crystals) sprinkled on the black.
