ORIGINS OF THE MINERAL

Agate is mainly found in South America, notably Brazil, Argentina and Uruguay. But it can also come from India, the United States and Africa (Botswana, Madagascar...). Botswana Agate has a characteristic appearance with multiple white streaks. The name “agate” comes from the Greek philosopher Theophrastus (3rd century BC) who named it in reference to the river where it was discovered: the Achates River (in Sicily). Its magmatic formation often reveals nodules comprising layers of silica.
